Marta Kostyuk made it ten straight wins as she defeated Linda Noskova to advance to the semi-finals of the Madrid Open. The Ukrainian edged a tight first set, but it was very comfortable for the 23-year-old in the second as she won 7-6 (1) 6-0. Kostyuk is in brilliant form at the moment, having won the Open de Rouen less than a fortnight ago.
Her semi-final opponent is Anastasia Potapova. She continued her incredible run in Madrid with a three set win over former world number one Karolina Pliskova. Potapova became the first ever lucky loser to progress to the semi-finals of a WTA 1000 event. Potapova, who beat world number two Elena Rybakina in the previous round, looked on course for a comfortable win as she took the first set with ease and served for the match in the second. She had three match points, but Pliskova saved them all and sent the contest into a decider after winning the subsequent tiebreak. Despite the Czech going 3-1 up, Potapova fought back to win 6-1 6-7 (4) 6-3.
The head-to-head is locked at 2-2, but Kostyuk has won their last two meetings and came out on top in their only match on clay. She beat Potapova 6-3 6-2 at this event last year. Kostyuk is performing strongly at the moment and will start as the favourite.
