Marin Cilic enters the main draw as a lucky loser after failing to win his final qualifying round against Lloyd Harris. The 2014 US Open champion is 104 in the world and mostly competes on the Challenger Tour, though he did make the quarter-finals of the Dubai Open on the main tour in February. He picked up a title in Girona while he also made the final of another Challenger in Madrid.
Flavio Cobolli’s season has burst into life over the past six weeks after a very disappointing start to the season. He lost eight of his first nine matches of the campaign but then picked up his first ever ATP title at the Bucharest Open in early April. He suffered another dip during the middle of the clay season but is coming off the back of another tournament win after triumphing in Hamburg, with victories over Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Andrey Rublev in the final.
Cobolli leads the head-to-head 1-0 after beating the Croatian on clay in Umag two years ago. The Italian can be unpredictable but with two titles on clay this season, he really should be expected to defeat the veteran.
