Maria Timofeeva is in the main draw of the Open de Rouen as a lucky loser. The 22-year-old won her first qualifying match against Yara Bartashevich but then lost in the next stage to Chloe Paquet. She also attempted to qualify for the Linz Open last week but lost to Tamara Korpatsch. Timofeeva, who is ranked outside of the top 150 in the world rankings, is yet to make it past the second-round of a tournament this season.
She faces Katie Boulter. The former British number one has already notched up a title this season after her success at the Ostrava Open. Boulter does not excel on clay too often, though she did win a WTA 125k event in Paris last year on the eve of Roland Garros. She competed at the Linz Open last week, losing to Elena-Gabriela Ruse in straight sets.
Timofeeva has struggled for results so far this season, and Boulter is still the clear favourite to advance to the next stage.
