Maria Mateas’s last match on the WTA Tour was a heavy 6-0 6-2 defeat to Veronika Kudermetova in the first-round of the Charleston Open. Since then, the American has competed in a raft of ITF events but failed to make a true breakthrough in any of them.
Elizabeth Mandlik has also struggled on the ITF Tour but did at least win her two matches in qualifying to enter the main draw here. Both are ranked over 200 in the world and have faced off against each other twice but this will be their first tour-level encounter.
Mateas won both of those matches, with one taking place on clay two years ago in Boca Raton. They also played earlier this season, with Mateas winning once more. Both matches went to three sets and there is little to separate the two players when it comes to ranking and form. We can see this one going the distance.
