Marcos Giron earned some decent finishes in the early part of the season, making back-to-back quarter-finals at the Delray Beach and Mexican Opens before reeling off three consecutive wins to make the round-of-16 in Indian Wells. His transition to clay has not been a particularly successful one, though he did earn a win against compatriot and world number four Taylor Fritz on his way to making the third-round of the Italian Open.
Tallon Griekspoor made nearly the perfect start to his clay court season but the lost in the final of an ATP 250 event in Morocco to Luciano Darderi. He also pushed Alexander Zverev all the way in the quarter-finals of the BMW Open but lost in three close sets. Since then, he failed to make inroads in Madrid and Rome before a quarter-final loss in a Bordeaux Challenger event to Nikoloz Basilashvili.
The head-to-head is locked at 1-1 with both matches being played on hard court. There’s just nine places separating these two in the rankings but Griekspoor has won more than double the amount of matches on clay this season with nine victories to Giron’s four, with both players losing six times. The Dutchman has shown himself to be more comfortable on the surface and is good value to win.
