Marcos Giron produced an excellent showing to reach the last eight with an eye-catching win over Lorenzo Sonego.

The American upset the Italian eighth seed 6-4 6-4 and will now face his compatriot Brandon Nakashima for a spot in the semi-finals.

The fourth seed came out on top by a 7-5 6-3 scoreline in a tough clash with defending champion Juncheng Shang.

Nakashima leads the head-to-head 1-0 with a notable 6-4 6-4 win in the final in San Diego three years ago.

The higher-ranked American also earned the bragging rights when they locked horns in a lower-tier event five years back, which fits with the feeling that his game is just that much stronger than Giron’s across most departments.
