Marco Trungelliti entered the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time in his career after a superb run to the final of the Bucharest Open at the start of last month. He had already picked up a Challenger title in Kigali a fortnight earlier. Trungelliti’s recent form has been less impressive, as he only entered tournaments in Barcelona and Madrid as a lucky loser, losing in round one of both.
He takes on Zachary Svajda. The American’s best result of the campaign so far was his title in San Diego on the Challenger Tour. However, he has not picked up a victory since the qualifying stages of the Miami Open in March. He lost to teenager Moise Kouame in round one, and followed that up with early losses in Houston, Madrid and Cagliari.
Svajda is unproven on clay, especially compared to someone like Trungelliti. The veteran will head into this match as the favourite to advance.
