Magdalena Frech’s losing run extended to eight matches in Rome as she was beaten by Alexandra Eala in her opening match. She made a poor start and despite a fightback in the second, went on to lose 6-0 3-6 6-4. Frech has failed to win since reaching the final of the Merida Open back in late February, and she will be desperately hoping for an upturn here ahead of Roland Garros.
Her first-round opponent is Talia Gibson. The Australian shone during the Sunshine Double events, as she qualified for both tournaments and defeated a host of big names on her way to making deep runs, which included a quarter-final appearance at Indian Wells. Her results on clay have been considerably less impressive, but she was able to qualify for this event following wins over Eva Lys and Zhang Shuai.
Frech will be low on confidence, while Gibson does have some momentum on her side after the wins in qualifying.
