Magdalena Frech’s average season continued as she suffered a surprising defeat to Nikola Bartunkova in straight sets after winning her first-round match in Guadalajara. She did make the third-round of the US Open, pushing Coco Gauff into a third set, but Frech has lost 14 of her 22 matches on outdoor hard courts this season and her ranking has dropped to 46 in the world.
Her opponent Ella Seidel is now inside the top 100 of the world rankings for the first time in her career after equalling her best WTA Tour result of the season by making the quarter-finals of the Korea Open last week. She defeated defending champion Beatriz Haddad Maia in one of the longest matches of the year on her way to making the final eight. Seidel then backed that up with two qualifying wins to make the main draw in Beijing.
They have faced each other once before, in the first qualifying stage of the Linz Open last year, with Seidel, then just 18, beating Frech in straight sets. The youngster has momentum on her side, and we back her to win impressively once again.
