Magda Linette won her first-round match in Madrid after beating Robin Montgomery. The pair exchanged breaks in the first set, with Linette breaking once more as Montgomery was serving to stay in the set. A controlled second saw Linette complete a 6-4 6-3 victory after one hour and 27 minutes. Her best results of the season occurred at the start of the year, as she advanced through to the last eight in Hobart and Auckland.
She now faces Iva Jovic. The American began her clay court season with an encouraging run to the semi-finals of the Charleston Open. The teenager defeated Alycia Parks, Sofia Kenin and Anna Kalinskaya, before her run ended against defending champion and eventual winner Jessica Pegula in three sets. Jovic then lost two singles matches at the Billie Jean King Cup, but she will hope that was just a small dip ahead of this WTA 1000 event.
Jovic leads the head-to-head 2-0, but this is their first match against each other on clay. If she can rediscover the form she showed in Charleston, she’ll have a strong chance of victory.
