It had been a brilliant start to the campaign for Olympique Lyonnais but they will now have to bounce back as they welcome likely strugglers Angers to Parc OL this weekend.

Lyon preview: Chaotic OL

Paulo Fonseca has returned to the dugout for Olympique Lyonnais after a six-month suspension, and his Lyon side have started the season well as they seek to tone down the John Textor-influenced chaos off the pitch that did spread onto it.

They began the campaign with three successive victories in Ligue 1, but do come into this one on the back of a 3-1 loss to Stade Rennais at Roazhon Park in a game in which they had led until the final 15 minutes before Tyler Morton was sent off.

Angers preview: Steady but likely strugglers

Having gained promotion to Ligue 1 during the 2023/24 season, Angers managed to steer themselves to a mid-table finish in France’s top-flight, but the question mark over whether or not they can avoid second season syndrome remains.

Under the management of Alexandre Dujeux, Angers sit in the bottom-half of the Ligue 1 table with a victory, two draws and a defeat from a steady start to the campaign. They most recently shared a 1-1 draw away at newly-promoted Metz last weekend.

Lyon team news: Morton suspended

England U21 international midfielder Tyler Morton is missing through suspension for this one, and they also have a couple of injuries with both Orel Mangala and Ernest Nuamah injured.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Descamps; Maitland-Niles, Clinton Mata, Niakhate, Abner; Tessmann, Tolisso; Karabec, Tolisso, Fofana; Merah

Unavailable: Morton (Suspended), Mangala (Injured), Nuamah (Injured)

Angers team news: Fully fit

Unusually for a team in one of Europe’s so-called ‘big five’ leagues, Angers have a fully fit and available squad for this weekend and so they don’t have to make any changes.

Predicted XI (4-2-3-1): Koffi; Arcus, Camara, Lefort, Hanin; Bekhdim, Belkelba; Raolisoa, Mouton, Cherif; Peter

Unavailable:

Lyon vs Angers prediction

Olympique Lyonnais have certainly shown more control in their game this season, but that was up until last weekend’s Tyler Morton red card, which stirred Rennes into a comeback. Angers will once again seek to ensure they avoid Ligue 1 relegation by being defensive and difficult to break down. Even though their squad is thin, Lyon should be able to cover for Morton and, with their home advantage, should squeeze out their fourth win of the season a week later than it seemed as though it would come.

Lyon vs Angers tip: Lyon to win & under 3.5 goals
