Luciano Darderi advanced to the round-of-16 in Hamburg as he beat Roman Andres Burruchaga. Darderi, who reached the semi-finals of the Italian Open last time out, took the first set relatively comfortably but was pushed in the second. Burruchaga served to take the match into a deciding set and had a 4-0 lead in the tiebreak, but Darderi came back to win 6-3 7-6 (4).
He now faces Yannick Hanfmann. The German won in three sets against Max Schoenhaus. Hanfmann took the first set, but the teenager responded by levelling the match after winning the second on a tiebreak. The 34-year-old was not broken in set three as he won 6-3 6-7 (4) 6-4.
Darderi leads the ATP head-to-head 3-0. They have faced each other twice this season, with the Italian winning in the final of the Chile Open and also beating Hanfmann earlier this month in Rome. He is yet to drop a set against Hanfmann across their previous three matches.
