Luciano Darderi is the top seed at the Grand Prix Hassan II, and enters the tournament as the defending champion, having beaten Tallon Griekspoor in the final last year. He has already enjoyed success on clay this season, winning the title in Santiago along with a final appearance in Rio. He also enjoyed his best run at a Grand Slam by making the round-of-16 at the Australian Open. His last event in Miami was less impressive as he lost his opening match to youngster Martin Landaluce.
He received a bye in the first-round and now faces Mattia Bellucci. He required three sets to get past Reda Bennani in the opening stage of the tournament. The Italian created plenty of chances but only converted three out of 16 break point opportunities. Nevertheless, he would still come through to win 6-3 3-6 6-4.
Darderi’s stellar record on clay at tour-level cannot be played down, with the Italian having picked up four titles on the surface within the last year. He should be able to get his campaign off to a strong start here.
