Martn Landaluce claimed his first win of the season and just the third tour-level triumph of his career against Marcos Giron.

The Spaniard was superb as he took down the home favourite 6-3 7-6 to book a showdown with Luciano Darderi.

The Italian 17th seed sits 133 places above the 20-year-old qualifier in the rankings and is flying high following a South American clay swing that saw him claim a runner-up berth as well as the title in Santiago. 

A narrow loss at the first hurdle at Indian Wells means the transition back to hardcourt may still be a work in progress and Darderi is vulnerable on a hardcourt.

Landaluce may not have the experience to back up the upset in the last round here, but if Darderi does falter, he has enough game to make it count.
