Luciano Darderi defeated Yannick Hanfmann for a third time this season as he progressed to the quarter-finals of the Hamburg Open for a third straight year. Darderi was broken in his first service game but quickly got back on level terms. He went behind in the tiebreak and was forced to save three set points, before going on to clinch the set. The second set went on serve but Darderi broke Hanfmann as he was serving to stay in the tournament to win 7-6 (7) 7-5.
He now faces Alex de Minaur. The Australian beat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in three sets. He won 6-2 4-6 6-4. This run to the last eight should help restore confidence for De Minaur, who has yet to rediscover his peak level since winning the Rotterdam Open in February and arrived after early exits in Madrid and Rome.
However, it’s hard to look past Darderi for this one. He’s in great form, having reached the semi-finals of the Italian Open last time out, his best ever result at a Masters 1000 event. He’s shown himself to be very consistent when it comes to reaching the latter stages of clay court events over the last year.
