Luca Van Assche defeated fellow countryman Hugo Gaston in the first-round. He failed to serve out the match on two separate occasions in the second set, but he kept his composure in the tiebreak, winning the last three points to seal a 6-4 7-6 (5) win.
He now takes on Tallon Griekspoor. The Dutchman reached the final of this event last year, losing to Luciano Darderi. After a slow start to the campaign, Griekspoor’s results picked up as he reached back-to-back quarter-finals at the Open Occitanie and Rotterdam Open. He then enjoyed a brilliant run in Dubai as he beat Alexander Bublik, Jakub Mensik and Andrey Rublev to reach the final. However, a left hamstring injury sustained in the semi-final forced him to withdraw.
This is Griekspoor’s first match back, and while he may take a few games to get up to speed, he is still the favourite to make it through.
