Luca Van Assche has already enjoyed a strong start to 2026, as he has picked up two titles on the Challenger Tour. The Frenchman won in Quimper and backed that up with a title win in Lille less than a month later. He has been unable to translate that form onto the ATP, as he lost in the qualifying stages of both Indian Wells and Miami.
He faces a fellow countryman in Hugo Gaston. He has also shown some form at Challenger level, though he is yet to make a final. Gaston has reached the semi-finals of his last two events in St Brieuc and Thionville, but he is yet to win an ATP match this season. Gaston retired against Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open and failed to make it out of qualifying for events in Brisbane and Rotterdam.
There is just one place separating the pair in the world rankings, but Van Assche has enjoyed the better season up to this point and is very capable on this surface.
