The American edged his compatriot Ethan Quinn 7-5 6-4 to set a second career showdown with the Italian.
Sonego won their first encounter in Metz two years ago in a final-set breaker and it could be tight again with just six places separating them in the rankings.
There's some mileage in backing this to go three, but we expect Sonego's extra firepower to seem him through, particularly if he finds the quality of his last two sets against Cerundolo.
