Lorenzo Musetti’s bid to go one better in Chengdu is growing in momentum as he reached the semi-finals for the third time in a row.
The 2024 finalist booked his spot in the last four with a dominant 6-3 6-3 victory over Nikoloz Basilashvili and remains the clear favourite to finally land a maiden title here.
It was the Italian’s sixth win in his last seven outings and sets up a clash with Alexander Shevchenko following the Kazakhstani’s 7-6 3-6 6-2 triumph over Taro Daniel.
Their first and only previous encounter saw Musetti waltz to a 6-1 6-1 6-2 success at Roland-Garros two years ago and the top seed will have the pressure of expectation on his shoulders again against the world number 96.
Shevchenko has battled hard to reach this stage of the tournament, but the stress of going the distance in each match may well take its toll here against what will be a step up in class in the shape of the world number nine.
