Liudmila Samsonova has made the quarter-finals in Brisbane and Abu Dhabi so far this season, but first-round exits at other events have left her with a negative win-loss record in 2026. She is also currently on a three-match losing run, after early exits in Doha and Dubai. She has points to defend here, having made the quarter-finals last year.
She faces Ashlyn Krueger in the second-round after receiving a bye. The American continued her upturn in form as she recorded a fantastic straight sets win over Magda Linette. Krueger won the first four games in the match and maintained her level throughout to win 6-1 6-4 after one hour and 19 minutes. Krueger reached the semi-finals at the ATX Open last week and now has four wins from her last five matches.
Samsonova leads the head-to-head 1-0 after a dominant win at the 2024 US Open, but she is not performing strongly at the moment and could be vulnerable against Krueger if her game is not firing in the opening stages.
