Linda Noskova advanced to the next stage in Madrid as her third-round opponent Liudmila Samsonova withdrew before their match took place. Noskova had begun her campaign with a straight sets win over Emiliana Arango, while she progressed to the Stuttgart Open quarter-finals last week. Her best result of the season so far was a semi-final appearance at Indian Wells.
She faces Coco Gauff next. The American recovered from a set and a break down to beat Sorana Cirstea. Gauff was out of sorts physically and looked on course for defeat as Cirstea broke to go 4-3 up in the second. However, the world number three would fight back to win 4-6 7-5 6-1.
Gauff leads the head-to-head 2-0 but this is their first match on a clay court. The 22-year-old is struggling with a stomach virus, which contributed to her display against Cirstea, and this is likely to be yet another very difficult match for her, if she is fit to play.
