Leylah Fernandez overcame Alexandra Eala in straight sets to book her place in the next round of the Stuttgart Open. The Canadian, who has struggled this season, made a fast start and maintained her level to win 6-1 6-4.
She now takes on Zeynep Sonmez after her brilliant victory over Jasmine Paolini in the first-round. Paolini is the world number eight and reached the final of Roland Garros in 2024, but she was blown away by Sonmez, who won 6-2 6-2 after one hour and 15 minutes. The Turk, who is ranked outside of the top 70 in the world rankings, only conceded the one break point and dominated the match from start to finish.
Fernandez is one win away from her first quarter-final of the season, while she is yet to notch back-to-back victories in 2026. There is pressure on the 2021 US Open finalist, and Sonmez will take a huge amount of confidence from her display in the first-round.
