Leylah Fernandez made it back-to-back quarter-finals after getting past Ann Li in straight sets. Li had won their two previous meetings, but Fernandez controlled this encounter from the start and was not broken on serve as she won 6-3 6-2 after one hour and 23 minutes. The Canadian has struggled for much of this campaign, but does seem to have found some form.
She now takes on Mirra Andreeva. The Russian made it three quarter-finals in a row at Madrid after a dramatic win over Anna Bondar. Andreeva broke to go 6-5 up in the first set, but Bondar broke back and went on to win it on a tiebreak. The Russian regrouped to win the second and was on the verge of victory at 5-1 in the decider. However, Bondar staged a late fightback as she reeled off five games in a row, with the match ending up being decided by a tiebreak. Andreeva finally saw off the Hungarian to win 5-7 6-3 7-6 (5).
The last match will have taken a lot out of Andreeva and with such a quick turnaround, Fernandez could push her all the way.
