Leylah Fernandez vs Maria Sakkari prediction
Leylah Fernandez last competed at the US Open, with the 2021 finalist making the third-round as she then went on to lose to world number one and eventual winner Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets. Her highlight of the season was her title in Washington at the end of July, but Fernandez has been rather inconsistent in her results since.
Maria Sakkari is her second-round opponent. Sakkari advanced through her first-round match after a tight three set over Ashlyn Krueger. A topsy-turvy encounter saw the Greek broken when serving for the match in the second set and then having to recover from a 4-2 deficit in the decider to win 7-6 6-7 7-5 after three hours and 29 minutes. This was the third longest match of the year, and Sakkari will need to improve in some aspects if she is to get past Fernandez.
The former world number three does lead the head-to-head 3-0 with their last match taking place in January 2024, before Sakkari lost form and tumbled down the rankings significantly. Fernandez is a gritty competitor on this surface and has enough quality to get past Sakkari in Beijing.
