Leylah Fernandez got her campaign in Miami up and running as she defeated Oksana Selekhmeteva in the second-round. A topsy-turvy first set saw Fernandez go 3-0 up, only to be broken twice as Selekhmeteva took control. The Canadian would break back and dominate the tiebreak to go in front, though she would be taken to a third set. The 2021 US Open finalist kept her composure and sealed a 7-6 (1) 3-6 6-1 win. She has not enjoyed a strong start to 2026, but Fernandez will be hoping to string a number of wins together at this 1000 event.
She faces Jessica Pegula next. The American made it through after her opponent Francesca Jones retired. Pegula was leading 6-1 3-0. She has already had a very strong campaign, having won the WTA 1000 event in Dubai and reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open.
The head-to-head is 2-1 in favour of Pegula, though Fernandez did win their last match in Washington last year on her way to the title. Fernandez was still erratic in her last match and gave away 13 break point opportunities in total. That is unlikely to cut it against someone as consistent as Pegula.
