Lech Poznan managed to defeat Finnish outfit Kuopion Palloseura in the knockout playoff round of the UECL but they are in average form, heading into this one on the back of a cup quarter-final loss to Gornik Zabrze before a 2-1 defeat to Widzew Lodz.

They now face a Shakhtar Donetsk side that, coached by Arda Turan, managed to edge past Oleksandriya by a goal to nil in their most recent outing in the Ukrainian Premier League. That leaves them sitting three points clear of LNZ at the top-of-the-table in Ukraine.

Shakhtar are a shadow of their former selves but remained strong in the league phase and have to be viewed as favourites for both legs of this tie.
