Learner Tien notched up another victory over Nishesh Basavareddy as he made it through to his 10th tour-level quarter-final and his first on clay. Tien, who beat Basavareddy at Wimbledon and the Next Gen Finals last year, was pushed by his opponent as he dropped the second set after taking the lead. Nevertheless, he came back to win 6-3 3-6 6-1.
He will now face Roman Andres Burruchaga for a place in the last four. The Argentine continued his fine form as he extended his winning run to seven matches with a win over Brandon Nakashima. Burruchaga broke twice at the start of the decider and held off a fightback from Nakashima to win 6-4 2-6 6-4. He won a Challenger title in Sao Paulo last week.
Tien is the higher ranked player, and will be the favourite to win, but Burruchaga is enjoying a fine run and will look to test the 20-year-old at any given opportunity.
