Lazio preview: Sarri back at Lazio

Over the summer, Maurizio Sarri returned to Lazio for a second stint in charge, despite a reported falling out with owner Claudio Lotito, and it has started in expectedly underwhelming fashion for the Romans this season.

They have suffered two defeats from their opening three 2025/26 Serie A matches thus far, and they were most recently beaten by newly-promoted Sassuolo by a goal to nil, following a defeat to Como on the opening day of the campaign, too.

Roma preview: Gasp’s Roma

Gian Piero Gasperini left Atalanta for Roma over the summer. The experienced coach had built Atalanta into becoming legitimate perennial UEFA Champions League qualifiers, before departing for the Stadio Olimpico this season.

The Giallorossi had begun with back-to-back victories before the September international break, but they returned from the stoppage with a surprise 1-0 loss at home to Torino last weekend.

Lazio team news: Several doubts

Lazio are dealing with several injury doubts for this weekend, as Patric is set to be sidelined alongside midfielder Matias Vecino and key striker Valentin Castellanos.

Predicted XI (4-3-3): Provedel; Marusic, Gila, Romagnoli, Tavares; Guendouzi, Cataldi, Dele-Bashiru; Cancellieri, Pedro, Zaccagni

Unavailable: Gigot (Injured)

Questionable: Patric (Injured), Matias Vecino (Injured), Rovella (Injured), Lazzari (Injured), Taty Castellanos (Injured)

Roma team news: No Bailey or Dybala

Gian Piero Gasperini would love to play both Paulo Dybala and Leon Bailey in the two so-called ‘number ten’ positions in his 3-4-2-1 system, but both are sidelined through injury this weekend.

Predicted XI (3-4-2-1): Svilar; Mario Hermoso, Mancini, Ndicka; Wesley, Kone, Cristante, Angelino; El Aynaoui, Matias Soule; Ferguson

Unavailable: Bove (Illness), Dybala (Injured), Bailey (Injured)

Questionable:

Lazio vs Roma prediction

These are two arch-rivals that will want to bring the hostility in the crowd onto the pitch, but both sides are requiring a major improvement in their performance level from last week. That said, Lazio’s performances on the road have been genuinely woeful, whereas Roma have at least shown signs of falling into line under Gasperini. The Romans will be expecting to at least avoid defeat as the nominal away team.

Lazio vs Roma tip: Double chance – Roma to win or draw
