Laura Siegemund advanced to the second-round after a comfortable win over Irina-Camelia Begu. The Romanian was making her return to action following a long-term injury, and she was competitive at the start of the first set, with both players exchanging breaks of serve. However, she would soon fall away, as Siegemund won the final nine games to claim a 6-4 6-0 win after one hour and 26 minutes.
She now faces Jasmine Paolini. The Italian’s difficult season continued in Stuttgart last week, as she lost her opening match against Zeynep Sonmez. Paolini was poor from the start as she was on the end of a 6-2 6-2 defeat. She has reached just one semi-final in 2026, and that was at the Merida Open back in February.
Paolini leads the head-to-head 2-0 and 1-0 on clay. She will be seen as the favourite to advance despite her poor form, but Siegemund’s playstyle could frustrate the Italian, who must be low on confidence at the moment.
