Laura Samsonova continued her brilliant run as a wildcard in Madrid as she came from a set down to beat Xinyu Wang. The 18-year-old, who notched up her first WTA 1000 win after beating Tatjana Maria earlier this week, struggled at the start of the match but quickly took control of the second and third sets to win 2-6 6-3 6-0.
She now faces Anna Bondar. The Hungarian pulled off an upset as she defeated Elina Svitolina. Bondar had beaten Svitolina in the first-round of the US Open last year, and she was the Ukrainian’s nemesis once again as she did not drop her serve on her way to winning 6-3 6-4.
Bondar will take a lot of confidence from a first ever win over a top 10 opponent, and if she maintains her level in this match, she will have a great chance of advancing through to the round-of-16.
