Laslo Djere has not been able to back up his Chile Open victory with a similarly deep run on clay. He lost in the first-round of the Bucharest Open, couldn’t make it out of qualifying for Monte-Carlo and lost in the round-of-16 to Carlos Alcaraz in Barcelona. The latter event was a more promising tournament for the Serbian, having made it out of qualifying and won three successive matches in total.
He then withdrew from the Madrid Open before he was due to face Daniil Medvedev in the second-round. There are fitness concerns surrounding Djere, who did take a month off due to injury after his tournament win in Santiago.
Tomas Martin Etcheverry has struggled to make a true breakthrough over the past month but has admittedly faced some tough opponents in the early rounds. He lost in the second-round of both Monte-Carlo and Madrid to in-form Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and Lorenzo Musetti respectively, while he also lost to Alex de Minuar in a close two set match in Barcelona.
Djere does lead the head-to-head 1-0, beating the Argentinian on clay in Hamburg two years ago. Nevertheless, Etcheverry has the ability to outlast the Serbian and make it through in three sets.
