Katie Volynets made it out of qualifying to make the main draw in Beijing. Her best result on the WTA Tour was all the way back in January when she reached the quarter-finals in Auckland.
Peyton Stearns will be her opponent in the first-round. The American’s best run of form was during the clay court season, as she reached the round-of-16 in Madrid and got through to the last four of the Italian Open. However, Stearns’ form has been mostly unimpressive after that and she has failed to win consecutive matches since that run in Rome. Furthermore, her record on hard courts has seen her lose 13 of 22 matches so far this season.
Volynets leads the head-to-head 1-0 after a win in the quarter-finals of the ATX Open two years ago. Her gritty and consistent baseline game is more suited to these conditions and she is more than capable of defeating Stearns in round one.
