Katerina Siniakova recovered from a poor start to beat Sofia Kenin in the first-round of Indian Wells. Kenin comfortably took the first set and was on course for victory as she established a 4-2 lead in the second. However, the pendulum swung violently in Siniakova’s direction after that, as she won 10 of the next 11 games to seal a 1-6 6-4 6-1 win.
She takes on Leylah Fernandez, with the Canadian receiving a bye in round one. The Canadian has not made a strong start to this year, with six losses from eight matches. Fernandez is yet to win back-to-back matches this season and has not made it past the third-round here since 2022.
Fernandez is vulnerable at the moment, and though she is the favourite here, Siniakova will believe she can pull off an upset if she picks up from where she left off in her last match.
