Karolina Pliskova recovered from a poor start to beat Sinja Kraus in the first-round of the Madrid Open. The former world number one dropped the first set, but completely dominated the second as the match went to a decider. Pliskova was a break up for the majority of the set, only to be broken when serving for the victory. Nevertheless, she broke in the very next service game to win 2-6 6-1 6-4.
She faces Maria Sakkari in the next round. The former world number three is a former semi-finalist at this event, having achieved the feat in 2023. Sakkari has enjoyed a more positive season up to this point, with a semi-final appearance in Doha backed up by a run to the third-round of Indian Wells. However, she lost in the first-round of the Charleston Open last time out and is currently on a three-match losing run.
