Karolina Muchova got her campaign up and running with a straight sets victory over Aliaksandra Sasnovich. The Czech won the first set comfortably but did go 4-2 down in the second. However, she reeled off the last four games to seal a 6-2 6-4 victory. This was her first match since making the semi-finals of the Miami Open last month. Muchova has now won 19 of her 23 matches in 2026 so far.
She goes up against Elise Mertens in the next round of the competition. The Belgian also enjoyed a straight-forward win in the first-round as she defeated Ella Seidel. Mertens was 3-1 down in the second set but recovered to win 6-3 6-4.
This is the first match on clay between the pair, with the head-to-head currently at 1-1, but they have not played each other since 2021. Muchova is enjoying a fine season up to this point, and her variety could give her the edge against Mertens, who will be aiming for her first quarter-final of the campaign.
