Karim Bennani produced a big upset in the first-round as he beat Quentin Halys in three sets. Bennani was not broken on serve throughout the match, as he raced ahead in the decider to win 6-4 6-7 (5) 6-2 after two hours and 17 minutes. The 18-year-old wildcard had never even competed in a Challenger event, but he now has a tour-level victory to his name.
He now goes up against Yannick Hanfmann. The German got past Jesper de Jong in straight sets to book a meeting with Bennani. The first set went on serve, with Hanfmann edging ahead in the tiebreak. He was 3-1 down in the second, but he came back to win 7-6 (6) 6-4. Despite being broken, Hanfmann won 91% of his first serve points throughout the match.
