Karen Khachanov booked his place in the third-round of the Italian Open after defeating Alexander Shevchenko in straight sets. The Russian had beaten Shevchenko at that stage of the event two years ago, and he repeated the feat with a 6-4 6-4 win.
He now faces Botic van de Zandschulp. The Dutchman advanced to round three after coming from a set down to beat Aleksandar Kovacevic. The lucky loser broke twice as he sealed a dominant first set, but Van de Zandschulp hit back in the second. There were no breaks of serve in the deciding set, with the match going all the way to a tiebreak. Van de Zandschulp converted on his second match point to win 2-6 6-2 7-6 (5).
The head-to-head is 1-1 between the pair, but this will be their first meeting on clay. Khachanov has not been convincing for quite some time, and he could be tested by Van de Zandschulp.
