Kamilla Rakhimova advanced to the next round after a straight sets win over Elvina Kalieva. She made a fantastic start as she opened up a 3-0 lead in the first set, but Kalieva struck with three straight games to draw level. Rakhimova broke again to take the lead, and then broke Kalieva when she was serving for the second set. The world number 74 dominated the tiebreak to win 6-3 7-6 (1).
She faces Ann Li in the next round. The American came from a set down to beat Daria Kasatkina. A tight first set saw Kasatkina broken when serving for it at 5-4, though she would still win the tiebreak. Li looked in trouble at 2-0 down, only to win the next six games in a row to level the match up. A close decider went the way of Li, who won 6-7 (6) 6-2 6-4 after two hours and nine minutes.
It’s not been a great season for Li up to this point, but she showed a lot of resolve in the previous match, and that should be a boost for her ahead of this match against Rakhimova.
