Justin Engel is handed a wildcard for this event in Hamburg. It’s not been the best of campaigns for the 18-year-old, who has yet to go beyond the second-round of any tournaments that he’s competed in so far this year. Engel has lost 13 of his 19 matches, and this is just his second tour-level match of the season, having lost in the first-round of the BMW Open last month.
His first-round opponent is Ugo Humbert. The Frenchman was able to win his opening match in Rome as he defeated Vit Kopriva in straight sets, but he then lost to Dino Prizmic. Humbert is not the strongest player on clay, and he has lost three of his five matches on the surface this season.
Engel is yet to get going in this campaign, and though Humbert is not at his best in these conditions, he’s still a clear favourite to come through this one.
