Joao Fonseca began his French Open campaign with a straight sets win over Luka Pavlovic. Fonseca went a break down in the first set but responded with a break of his own in the very next service game to draw level. He led after winning the set on a tiebreak, and he wasn’t broken on serve after that as he wrapped up a 7-6 (6) 6-4 6-2 victory. The Brazilian withdrew from the Hamburg Open last week citing a wrist issue, but he looked untroubled throughout this encounter.
He now faces Dino Prizmic. The Croatian won his first ever match at Roland Garros after easily getting past qualifier Michael Zheng. He breezed through the opening two sets and stormed into a 4-1 lead in the third. He won 6-1 6-1 6-3 after one hour and 45 minutes.
Fonseca is the favourite, but Prizmic cannot be underestimated after his clay court season, having reached the round-of-16 at the Italian Open as a qualifier, which included a win over Novak Djokovic in round two. This should be a thoroughly competitive second-round match.
