Last year’s finalist Jessica Pegula continues her quest to go one better on home turf against two-time major winner Victoria Azarenka.
The American has looked strong in the opening rounds following an indifferent period on the back of a title in Bad Homburg.
The 36-year-old veteran Azarenka has been a runner-up on three occasions at Flushing Meadows and bagged an impressive win over Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova last time out.
However, the Belarusian is featuring in her first tournament since Wimbledon and may be undercooked ahead of a tussle with the fourth seed.
This will be their seventh meeting and it is finely poised at three apiece.
Pegula won their last encounter in a final set tie break in Charleston last year. It may well be another close showdown here, but we think Pegula’s greater match sharpness will ultimately see her through.
