Jessica Pegula picked up her first win over Belinda Bencic at the fifth attempt as she advanced to the last eight at Indian Wells. The American took the first set comfortably but was broken when serving for the match at 5-4 in the second. Nevertheless, she regrouped well in the tiebreak and converted her third match point to win 6-3 7-6 (5). That stretched her winning run to eight matches, after her title win in Dubai last month.

She now faces Elena Rybakina. The two-time Grand Slam champion set up a meeting with Pegula after her opponent Sonay Kartal retired in the second set. Rybakina was leading 6-4 4-3.

Rybakina leads the head-to-head 4-3. They played each other in the semi-final stage of the Australian Open earlier this year, with Rybakina winning in straight sets on her way to the title. Pegula is performing as well as ever in terms of picking up consistent results, while Rybakina’s first serve percentage has not been nearly as dominant in this tournament. This could go all the way to three sets on this occasion.
