Jessica Pegula claimed her fourth WTA 1000 title last time out as she won in Dubai. Pegula dropped just one set on her way to the title and has reached the semi-finals or better of every tournament she has competed in since the US Open. The American faces Donna Vekic in the second-round. The Croatian ended a three-match losing run in the first-round as she impressively defeated Tereza Valentova in straight sets. Vekic found her level in two tiebreaks to win 7-6 (4) 7-6 (4) after two hours and 38 minutes.

Pegula leads the head-to-head 2-0 and has not dropped a set to Vekic. She has become one of the most consistent players on tour, and she will be expected to come out on top with a comfortable win here.
