Jessica Pegula came from a set and a break down to beat Jelena Ostapenko and advance to the round-of-16 at Indian Wells. Pegula dropped the first set and looked in trouble at 3-1 down in the second, but she reeled off five games in a row to draw level. Both players exchanged breaks at the start of the decider, but it was the American that raced clear to win 4-6 6-3 6-2 after one hour and 46 minutes. This extended Pegula’s winning run to seven matches, after her title win in Dubai last month.
She now faces Belinda Bencic. The Swiss made it through after a comfortable win over Elise Mertens. Bencic broke four times as she sealed a 6-2 6-3 victory after just one hour and 26 minutes.
The head-to-head is 4-0 in Bencic’s favour, but they have not faced each other since April 2023. Pegula is finding a way to win, and though her record against her opponent is poor, she is striking the ball beautifully and will be the favourite to win.
