Jessica Pegula remains a dark horse in this year’s draw after seeing off two-time major winner Victoria Azarenka.
The fourth seed overcame a second set wobble to post a 6-1 7-5 victory over the veteran Belarusian and remain flawless at the 2025 US Open.
Last year’s runner-up will now meet compatriot Ann Li for a spot in the quarter-finals after the world number 58 backed up her impressive win over Belinda Bencic with a 7-5 6-3 triumph over Aussie underdog Priscilla Hon.
Li will take confidence from the fact she has beaten Pegula in the past, but that was back in 2018 and the fourth seed did clinch a 6-3 7-6 win over her fellow-American at the French Open just a few months ago.
Li showed in that match that she can cause Pegula problems and you can’t rule out her getting a set against an opponent who can be susceptible to a shock every now and then.
We still expect Pegula to come good but it may well be a scrap and one for some in-match betting.
