Jessica Bouzas Maneiro’s best performance on the clay this season was getting to the quarter-finals of the Open de Rouen, where she was defeated in straight sets by Elina Svitolina. She lost to Magdalena Frech in the second-round of Madrid in her next event before another defeat to Svitolina in the second-round again in Rome. The Spaniard has shown glimpses of quality but needs to be able to produce sustained performances in order to make a deep run.
Julia Grabher will be her opponent in the first-round. She has struggled to make an impact in any of the events she’s competed in this season and has played just one clay event leading up to this one. At the Parma Open, she got through qualifying and won her first-round match before a loss at the next stage to Irina Camelia-Begu despite taking the first set.
Bouzas-Maneiro leads the head-to-head 2-1 with all matches having taken place on clay. Last time out, the Spaniard beat Grabher in the final of a 100 event but this will be their first encounter on the main tour.
