Jessica Bouzas Maneiro got her China Open campaign off to a winning start as she beat Jaqueline Cristian in straight sets. The Spaniard broke Cristian’s serve on three separate occasions to win the first set and won the last seven service games in total to claim a 6-4 6-0 victory after one hour and seven minutes. Bouzas Maneiro had gone four matches without a win prior to this tournament.
Dayana Yastremska received a bye in round one. The Ukrainian has not played too much over the past month, as she withdrew from the Cincinnati Open before her third-round match could take place and then lost in round one of the US Open after a three set defeat to Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. Her best result on a hard court this season saw her make the final of the Linz Open but that was all the way back in February.
Bouzas Maneiro leads the head-to-head 1-0 after beating Yastremska in the third-round of Wimbledon this year. She seems to have recovered from her recent slump, and we like her chances against the world number 31, who not featured for nearly a month.
