Jaume Munar returned to action following an injury at the start of the clay court season, and he initially struggled as he suffered early exits in Barcelona, Madrid and Rome. Munar dropped down to compete in Valencia on the Challenger Tour and managed to get through to the semi-finals, before backing that up with an appearance in the quarter-finals of the Geneva Open. He lost to Mariano Navone, with the Argentine going on to make the final.
His first-round opponent is Hubert Hurkacz. The Pole’s best result on clay was a run to the final of a Challenger event in Cagliari. He has also been competitive at ATP events on the surface, with a third-round appearance at the Monte-Carlo Masters. However, he lost in the first-round of the Italian Open to Yannick Hanfmann last time out.
If this contest becomes more physically gruelling, Munar may just have the edge. The hotter conditions could benefit Hurkacz in terms of utilising his effective serve, but he is likely to struggle if the rallies are extended.
