Jaqueline Cristian broke new ground at a Masters event as she reached the round-of-16 for the first time with a hard-fought win over Ekaterina Alexandrova. Cristian recovered from a break down in the decider, only to relinquish any control once more after losing her serve at 5-5. However, she broke again when Alexandrova was serving for the match, winning the tiebreak to claim a 6-3 4-6 7-6 (5) victory.
She now faces Jessica Pegula. The American was dominant in her previous round as she comfortably beat Leylah Fernandez. Pegula was not broken on serve and won 81% of her first serve points as she won 6-2 6-2 after one hour and six minutes.
They played each other on one previous occasion, with Pegula thrashing Cristian 6-0 6-1 in the first-round of the Australian Open. This should be a more competitive match, but the world number five has become such a consistent performer and should be able to make it through comfortably.
