Jannik Sinner extended his unbeaten run to 23 matches as he defeated lucky loser Jesper de Jong to reach the round-of-16 stage. The world number one wasn’t at his best in the first set as he was broken on two occasions but still went ahead, before racing clear in the second to win 6-4 6-2 against the Dutchman. Sinner will now have his toughest test since his return to the tour with a match against Francisco Cerundolo.
Cerundolo swept aside Sebastian Ofner 6-2 6-4 without losing his serve in his third-round match. The Argentine is coming off the back of two semi-final appearances and has been one of the most dangerous players on tour over the past month or so.
The head-to-head is 2-2 between the pair with Cerundolo winning their most recent encounter and their only match on clay two years ago at this very event at the exact same stage. He came from a set down to win 6-7 6-2 6-2 in 2023. Sinner’s match fitness will be severely examined as we see this going all the way.
